It’s been an inspiring and productive year for the English Faculty as we continue to build rich and meaningful learning experiences for our students.
Our teachers have been hard at work refining Stage 4 and 5 programs and assessments, ensuring they are engaging, challenging, and responsive to student needs. At the same time, the team is busy programming for the new Stage 6 English courses beginning in 2026 — an exciting opportunity to introduce fresh texts, diverse voices, and contemporary ideas into our senior classrooms.
This term has also been filled with creativity and connection. Students were inspired by author visits from Solli Raphael — the dynamic slam poet who encouraged students to use language to make change — and Morris Gleitzman, whose storytelling reminded us of the power of empathy and imagination.
We’ve also brought literature to life through live performance. Bell Shakespeare’s production of Macbeth captivated audiences with its energy and intensity, while Poetry in Action’s “War Poetry” performance offered a moving exploration of conflict, resilience, and the human experience through verse. Additionally,9k were involved in a visit to the Opera House to view the interesting and engaging performance of The Old Man with the Enormous Wings, and year 11 Advanced students engaged in a vivid interpretation of Macbeth.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to host our Shakespeare Showcase, a collaborative celebration between KHS and our local feeder primary schools. This initiative will provide an opportunity for younger students to engage with Shakespeare’s language, characters, and themes, and to share their creative interpretations alongside our high school students — a true celebration of community, creativity, and the enduring relevance of Shakespeare.
It’s been a year that reminds us why we love English — a subject that encourages us to think deeply, feel widely, and express ourselves with confidence and purpose.
