In the testing phase, students collect water samples from the Hunter River to investigate its health. Using simple scientific tools, they test for various indicators including pH levels, turbidity, temperature, and the presence of nutrients like nitrates and phosphates. These tests help reveal the quality of the water and signs of pollution.
Participating schools will be provided with a Testing Tool Kit, HRHC Educator Resource Material and other resources to support the testing phase.
Participation in the Hunter River Health Check offers schools a unique opportunity to enhance their programs for High Potential and Gifted students by integrating real-world environmental science and community engagement into the curriculum. By involving these students in hands-on research and data analysis, they can apply their critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a meaningful context.
