The Hunter River Health Check provides multiple opportunities for schools and students to get involved.
Each year, the Hunter River Health Check will provide opportunities for students to enter competitions reflecting the HRHC theme. From 2026, this may include logo design, posters, and story-writing challenges, with prizes and field days awarded to chosen entries.
Discovery Incursions for the Hunter River Health Check provide engaging, hands-on learning experiences designed to enhance students' understanding of environmental health and river ecosystems. Led by industry experts, participants will gain insights into water quality, biodiversity, and the impact of human activities on the river's health.
The discovery workshops occur in August as part of National Science Week. The workshops delve into the collated results from the first testing period and allow students to gain greater insights as to the purpose behind each measurement they collected. The workshops also bring industry collaborators to highlight challenges and solutions facing the Hunter River.
The period aligns with Threatened Species Week and World River Day, providing significance for students. With a deeper understanding around the purpose for our river testing, our citizen-science students retest the Hunter River. This testing period will also incorporate new parameters for observation from what the students learnt at the workshops.
