Jessica T : I was quite excited to come back to school. I like my new table and seating arrangement because I'm with my friends. I'm enjoying visualising the City of Aramanth as part of our reading task. PE is always fun.
Merryn : I like that in our Government topic we will be going to share all our learning to P6. I'm happy that I have Art this term and that Mr Connell lets us choose what we want to do.
Corey : I'm enjoying the Government topic and PE. I'm trying my best not to have my new table disbanded!
Ollie : I'm looking forward to do more coding and create a new game and I'm excited to see how good I can make the game. I'm also looking forward to our Government topic and creating my own political party.
It was great to welcome back the class from their Christmas and New Year holidays. Santa seems to have been very busy and very generous! We have launched straight back into our work and have started our new topic for the term which is Government and Politics. This week we have been sharing what we already know and what we would like to learn. So far we have looked at the political spectrum and the different types of government that exist. The culmination of the topic will see the children create their own political parties in small groups, create a manifesto for their party, present their party politics to the P6s and hold a mock election. Below are some photos of how important different groups think political issues should be prioritised by the Government. Some interesting differences between groups! In numeracy we are finishing off our multiplication and division before moving on to Fractions, Decimals and Percentages and in maths our attention will turn to Time. Writing this term will alternate between tools for writing and different text types (mostly discussion and other functional types to support our Government topic). In Technologies our focus will be coding. We will be using Scratch to support our development in block coding.
We have been having a very busy term in P7B. Our new topic this term has been Spanish using the context of Mexico. We have been learning some basic Spanish vocabulary and learning about different eras in Mexico's history. Some of our amazing work is featured below. In numeracy we have moved on to multiplication and division and we have been learning lots of different strategies to solve these type of problems. The Grid method is very popular for multiplication as is the partitioning method for division. Maths has seen us move onto investigating the different types of triangles, angles within triangles and the different types of angles. We had fun learning to use a protractor and we can now draw and measure angles. Our focus is literacy has moved from "tools for writing" to different text types and the use of more functional language. So far we have learned how to write an information report, an exposition (a one sided argument) and we are currently working on writing recounts. In reading we are continuing to use Blooms Taxonomy based comprehension skills and have been using our class novel, Me, Frida and the Secret of the Peacock Ring as the impetus for our shared and paired reading. Our Health and Wellbeing topic this term is Substance Misuse. The children have been undertaking paired work to investigate and research (safely) the risks and effects of drugs on our bodies and lifestyles. The class have been learning about how to be a good citizen online in our digital citizenship lessons in technologies.
Freddie : I have enjoyed doing PE with P7D. We have been playing Battleball and Capture the Flag. I enjoyed doing my Mexico project with my group and learning about the Spanish conquest.
Finlay : I have liked learning about multiplication because I find it quite fun. I've also quite liked learning some Spanish as it will be helpful if I visit Spain. Really enjoyed the Maker Space.
Jessica W : I really enjoyed our World War II project and how people used to live. I've liked learning a bit of Spanish. I'm not really enjoying Addie's Adventures as I'm sure why we are doing it.
Isla : I liked PE with P7D because I got together with some of my friends and have a bit of competition with them. I don't like my reading book just now as it is not the kind of book I would normally read. I'm enjoying writing just now.
This week we have been learning about why propaganda was important during WWII and how it was used on the Homefront. We have created our own posters using either our own slogans or established ones to "motivate" citizens to do something for the war effort. In numeracy we have moved on to learning to explain our strategies for addition and subtraction - "I just do it in my head" is now not an acceptable answer! Our focus in literacy continues to be tools for writing and this week we have added question and exclamation marks into our work. We are continuing with our Judaism project in RME and have been finding out about the importance of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to the faith.
Our World War II project has now reached the Blitz bombing and we have been learning about how people protected themselves during air raids, which cities were the focus of the Luftwaffe and when and how it took place. In numeracy we have moved on to rounding to the nearest 10, 100 or 1'000 for whole number and either to the nearest tenth or hundredth when working with decimals. This will help us when we move on to our four operations work (+, -, x and /). This week we also learned about Shabbat in RME and it's importance to the Jewish faith. Our tools for writing focus has been on the correct use of commas which has proven a little tricky for some. We have put in a lot of hard work already this term and I think that everyone is looking forward to the long weekend! Enjoy.
This week our focus in topic has been learning about why and how children were evacuated during World War II. The children have been busy creating leaflets to explain to parents why they should evacuate their child and how it will be carried out. I have attached some examples of their work. Next week we will be moving on to learn about the Blitz. Connected to our topic work is our RME focus on Judaism and this week we were learning about the synagogue. We have been developing our skills in vocabulary and inference this week in reading - all the reading groups are set up now and each has their own novel - all of which have a world war II theme. The children contribute to their reading jotter each day, mapping out characters, setting and plot as well as having quality discussions about vocabulary, predictions and questions that they have. In writing development we have been ensuring that we use capitals and full stops accurately in our writing and we hit our accuracy target on Thursday! Now the trick is for us to maintain it consistently. Our cooperative learning groups are producing great work on their famous mathematician and ancient number system posters - the research is now complete and they have started to put together their poster presentations which they will then present to the rest of the class and year group as part of their learners leading learning.
The work has started in earnest in P7B. This week we have started our new Reading approach to teaching reading skills and over the next four weeks we are very lucky to have the input of one of the Pedagogy teachers from ELC. The children engaged well with the approach and over the year we should see good progress in the development of their reading skills. In numeracy we are currently having discussions with the children in small groups to assess their prior learning in place value and addition and subtraction. It's a great way to not only find any gaps in learning but to get to know the children. We have also conducted our first STAR reading test and I will be setting up reading groups and getting them started on their first novel next week. We have also started thinking about our first topic which will be World War II with a focus on the Homefront. The children have shared what knowledge the already have and the questions that they would like answered. In PE the children are learning an invasion game with Mrs Arnold and Ultimate Frisbee with myself. The class also had their first quick sortie into the Maker Space with Mrs Murray and are looking forward to making and creating with her throughout this term. I have included some pictures of our work below and a copy of our class timetable.
The newly formed P7B has hit the ground running. We have a busy few first days getting to know each other and to put together our class routines and our class charter. Everything seems to be going smoothly so far and the children are beginning to mix and start to work cooperatively together. Next week the real hard work begins. I will also post our class timetable next week so that you can get an idea of when we are doing particular lessons. Below are a few examples of the work that the children completed as a growth mindset exercise - the learning pit - the children thought of all the negative things that cross their minds when faced with new challenges or difficult problems and then all the positive motivating language they could use to help them achieve their goals. We have also created our recognition wall ready for everybody putting in hard work and effort and upholding the class and school values.
This is where you will be able to see the latest information and work from P7B. Over the course of the year we will be adding information about what we have been doing in class, including lots of photos of our work and any essential details you need to know about upcoming events. Keep checking in weekly to see our latest news!
