Homemade Lava Lamps
Posted : Monday 15th May
As part of our science experiments and gauging chemical reactions we made homemade lava lamps using oil, water and food colouring. Dropping in a berocca tablet created the lava effect. We researched the science behind it found out that oil is lighter than water, thus it floats on top and the fizz of the berocca tablet forces the water through the oil creating "lava" globules.
Rugby Taster Sessions
Posted : Thursday 11th May
Lots of fun was had this morning at our Rugby taster session. Grant and Amber took the class through their paces and weren't happy until everyone was a little bit muddy! Lots of really great games to develop skills in passing. Nearly joined in myself - well nearly!
Eggcellent Results!
Posted : Friday 5th May
The results of our egg experiment are in. After a week in vinegar, the shells of our eggs have dissolved. The end product is a bouncy egg. The class have undertaken some research to find out why this happened and have concluded that the acetic acid (vinegar) caused a chemical reaction with the calcium carbonate in the egg shell. We could tell a chemical reaction was taking place because we could see carbon dioxide bubbles forming on the surface of the egg - this is one of the indicators that we learned suggests a chemical reaction is taking place.
Acid, Alkalis and Changing Colours
Posted : Friday 28th April
We have had a very busy week in P7B conducting experiments and recording our observations in science reports. We have been testing whether everyday items are acids or alkalis and using smelly cabbage juice as our universal indicator. We then tested the reliability of the cabbage juice with litmus paper to find out the exact ph of the item. Amy has let me photograph her science folder to give you an idea of the work that we have been doing. Our budding scientists then set up an experiment that they will monitor over the coming week - what happens to an egg if you submerge it in vinegar? Will a chemical reaction / change take place and if so, what will it be?
This one looks like an acid
Could it be an alkali?
A rainbow is forming
Confirming our results with litmus paper
The egg has been submerged into the vinegar and placed in a safe place. We've made our predictions as to what we think will happen. Who is going to be right?
Science Topic - Chemical Reactions
Posted : Tuesday 18th April
We have started our new topic which is science based and we will be learning about chemical reactions and their effects amongst other things. We started by sharing what we already know about the subject and what we would like to learn. Always a great place to start and allows the children to influence the direction of their learning.
We completed our first experiment today, using the humble ingredients of vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. The chemical reaction between the two substances caused the creation of carbon dioxide which we harnessed to inflate party balloons. Learning in action! Not sure everybody is as excited about having to write up their experiment and produce a science report though!!!
Parenthoodllbeing - Health & Wellbeing - Parenthood
Posted : Friday 17th March
We have been learning about conception, pregnancy and babies in our recent Health & Wellbeing lessons. Soon the children will be set the challenge of "looking after a baby" for a few days to experience some of the responsibilities of parenthood. Today we were working on creating a sensor using coding and micro:bits to attach to our "baby" to simulate when it would cry, giggle, sleep, etc. Looking forward to seeing how the children cope with this project.
P7 Parliamentary Elections
Posted : Friday 17th March
A selection of pictures from our Parliamentary Elections. The children did amazing pulling together their manifestos, posters and promotional material to persuade the P5s to vote for their political parties. A couple of the groups even created party political broadcasts - ace filming and editing! Our winning party was W.I.N (Wealth in Nation Party), closely followed by MEEFZ Racial Rights Party. Well done to Leafs, Land Girls, W.C.C (World Climate Change) and the Learners Party for taking part.
Safer Internet Day 2023
Posted : Tuesday 7th February
P7B having been taking part in the UK Safer Internet Day today. We have been "prioritising" some of the issues that we think exist on the internet and it's importance to us. We have also "time lined" when we think it is appropriate to do things on the internet. Each cooperative learning group had a different colour so there is quite a spread of ideas about when it is appropriate to do different things on the internet. Lastly, we were learning about how to safely read news online and what we need to look out for, what is sponsored content or clickbait and looking for the reliability of the news. All that on top of our numeracy, literacy and art - a busy day indeed!
Game Jam 2023
Posted : Monday 23rd January
P7B will be taking part in this years Game Jam where they will have the opportunity to create an online game using Scratch coding software. It's an exciting project and a great initiative to increase our computational thinking! Attached you will find more information and links to the project.
A Running Start!
Posted : Thursday 12th January
Happy New Year to one and all. We have had a busy start in P7. The class have come back well rested and raring to go. Our topic this term is Government and we have already started by looking at the different systems of government, the issues that face government and we are beginning to create our own political parties. You might find the "priorities diamonds" below quite revealing - the children have ranked current/typical priorities by how important they believe they are to them. In RME we will be learning different stories from the Old Testament and we have started with the creation story. Lots to look forward to this term and lots of hard work and effort needed.
Live Code Along with Microbit
Posted : Wednesday 14th December
We had great fun taking part in a live lesson and learning some new coding to create a flickering Christmas candle on our micro:bits. We are becoming quite the experts in coding!
Mexican Homework
Always Mrs Walker's favourite type of homework. Thank you Freya and Emily R! 🍰🧁
Frida Kahlo Portraits
Frida Kahlo was the queen of the selfie! As part of our Mexico / Spanish language topic we have been creating portraits of Frida Kahlo (in the style of Frida Kahlo). We are happy to share our "sketch" stage with you. We can't wait to see how they turn out.
Expert Mexican History Jigsaw
As part of our Mexican topic the class conducted research in to different periods of Mexico's history. Each cooperative learning group did a different period and then presented their findings to the rest of the class. As our last activity we took the knowledge that we had learned and created a timeline of Mexico's history. Please have a look at our presentations, we think you'll be impressed.
Computational Thinking with MicroBit
We have been practising our computation thinking using our MicroBits. We are learning how to code the microbit to display different messages. We planned first how the letters would appear and then we input the details using a block code editor. We were very impressed with our results. We are going to be developing lots of code to improve our computational thinking skills and use the microbit to help us across the curriculum.
World War II Work
We have been learning lots of information about World War II across the curriculum. In writing we have been learning about evacuees through creating Government Information Leaflets for Parents, imagining that we are evacuees and writing letters home. We learned about the Blitz through research and then wrote a newspaper article imagining that we were reporting on an evening of heavy bombardment. We then developed our newspaper writing skills by reporting on the German plane crash that happened in our class novel, Letters from the Lighthouse, and our final piece of newspaper writing was on the D Day landings. We've made spitfires and Messerschmitts while learning about The Battle of Britain, fiddly work! Some of the children have made Anderson shelters at home and we also made a class one with plaster of Paris and other materials. I think the class particularly enjoyed the Anderson shelters made from CAKE!!! I've included a selection of photos of our work for you to look at. I think you'll agree P7B have been working extremely hard.
Numeracy in Action
After a flying start to the term the class have been putting their learning into action. Working across the ability groups the children created Place Value games to showcase their understanding of Place Value. Brilliant ideas from all including Top Trumps (my personal favourite), Quest Place Value Journey, Snakes and Values, and card games. Pictures below!
And........here is a selection of our Place Value posters!
Growth Mindset and the UNCRC
At the beginning of the term we have been reminding ourselves (and each other) to adopt a growth mindset and how that can help us learn. We have created some learning pit posters to display in the classroom to remind ourselves when things become a little challenging. We have also been learning more about the role of the UNCRC and its importance in protecting our rights. We chose 5 of the articles to base our classroom charter on.
We chose the following articles from the UNCRC because we felt that they were important for our education and classroom ethos:-
2 : all children have these rights
3 : adults must do what's best for me
12 : I have the right to be listened to and taken seriously
17 : I have the right to get information in lots of ways, so long as it is safe
23 : If I have a disability I have the right to special care and an education
28 : I have the right to an education
29 : I have the right to an education that will develop my personality, respect for other's rights and the environment.
Timetable - Term 1
Our timetable for Term 1 is finalised.
