What the Service Does: The Deaf Support Service is made up of a Principle Teacher of Deaf Children (ToD) & Young People, a Qualified Teacher of Deaf Children & Young People (ToD) and two Communication Support Workers (CSW).
The team support children and young people who have permanent deafness and also work with pupils who have a long term conductive/mixed hearing loss. If schools or parents suspect a hearing loss, they can contact their GP and ask for a referral to audiology. If a diagnosis and aiding occurs, audiology will make a referral to the Deaf Support Service. If schools have a pupil who moves into their school with hearing aids or cochlear implants they should refer directly to the Deaf Support Service. The service is happy to give advice on glue ear which is a temporary conductive hearing loss which for some pupils may result in temporary aiding.
Age Range: Birth to school leaving age.
How to Access: Referrals should be made by Paediatric Audiology based at Edinburgh Royal Hospital for Children and Young People. Schools may also refer using the contact details below.
