2022
Dignity started off the year with a hybrid learning model, but transitioned in April to only in-person classes. School events resumed soon after, and the Sentul Boulevard was constantly bustling with students at sports, exhibitions, performances, entrepreneurship endeavours, and a wide variety of activities. There were minimal changes to the SEL curriculum for most departments, even as shifts took place in other aspects of school life.
Preschool and Lower Primary — Storytelling Curriculum (developed in-house)
Middle and Upper Primary, and Lower Secondary — Second Step
Middle Secondary — Habitudes
Upper Secondary — SEL Curriculum (developed in-house)
Dignity College — Habitudes (ASET) and Second Step (ELL)
The Storytelling Curriculum was a natural offshoot from Dignity's strong grounding in Montessori philosophy.
Following internal surveys on the age-appropriateness, effectiveness and cultural relevance of the curriculum, it was decided that using Second Step and Habitudes was not suitable as a long-term SEL curriculum. Dignity decided to create our own curriculum that would be more consistent with our vision, goals, student needs, and local context.
Please see the survey analysis in the slide decks below:
2021
When Dignity embarked on the journey of SEL implementation, we purchased subscriptions to the Second Step and Habitudes curricula to teach SEL on a weekly basis. The aim was to provide a strong, high quality, evidence-based curriculum for SEL delivery, which would be consistent and continuous across the year levels in Dignity.
Preschool adopted their own framework based on a Singaporean curriculum
Lower, Middle and Upper Primary, and Lower Secondary — Second Step
Middle and Upper Secondary — Habitudes
Dignity College — Habitudes (ASET) and Second Step (ELL)
Prior to the adoption of these curricula in March-April 2021, the Education departments developed their own curriculum independently, drawing from various sources including the SUKA Society Resilience workshop series and The 7 Habits of Effective Teens.
By the end of 2021, the SEL Team and SEL Committee were established. After gathering feedback from the SEL Committee, it was determined that the SEL Team would look into purchasing a new SEL curriculum for the Secondary levels. Several curricula were shortlisted for technical comparison and evaluation, but ultimately deemed unsuitable for the Dignity context.
The SEL Team thus undertook the task of curriculum development for the Upper Secondary department, with reference to Facing History and Ourselves — a resource that was strongly recommended through our network of SEL experts and practitioners.
