The careers and transition team work closely with students and the student well-being team to achieve successful transitions to post-school options.
Some of our programs include:
Australian School-Based Apprenticeships (ASBA) Students who undertake ASBAs complete a vocational qualification at a certificate II or III level while studying for their Senior Secondary Certificate. ASBAs give students a head-start in their career pathway and allows them to work and study in an industry they are passionate about while completing years 11 and 12.
MCSS works closely with the Australian Training Company to ensure students are successful in completing their ASBA and Senior Secondary certificate.
Work Experience (WEX) Work Experience is valuable for students who wish to explore different career pathways. WEX gives students the chance to learn about the workplace in an industry they are interested in and find out what working conditions and expectations are like in the real world. Students can also gain points from participating in WEX.
Vocational Learning Options (VLOs) VLOs are yet another opportunity for students to gain not only experience but competencies in vocational education. VLOs are run in conjunction with CIT and other employers. Students attend CIT or another training centre for a day a week for roughly a semester. On successful completion of their VLO students get competencies towards a vocational certificate as well as earning ‘E’ (external) points for their Senior Secondary Certificate. To participate in a VLO students need to apply and have an interview. VLOs are another opportunity for students who know what their career pathway is going to be and wishes to gain experience and competencies.
Guest speakers regularly give presentations to our students. These speakers are varied and include local and regional universities, Universities Admission Centre (UAC) CIT, apprenticeship centres, Defence and gap year providers to name a few.
We have strong links with the University of Canberra and CIT as well as partnerships with Australian Catholic University (ACU), Australian National University and employers.
MCSS has recently subscribed to ‘The Careers Department’ which we are very excited about. The Careers Department has excellent online resources which students can access at any time. We hope that this partnership will be a valuable asset in the exploration of students’ career pathways.
Students are always welcome to visit our careers office, which is located above the maths area. Our cheerful and friendly careers team are always willing to help.
