Writer's Camp

Writer's camp has lots of workshops from inspiring authors on the craft of writing and how to get published. It is the place to be if you have any interest in stories, movies, reading and writing. Learn how to create settings, characters, plots and style that will capture your reader. The camp is at Greenhills, next to the Cotter river, where you get to take a beautiful bushwalk. The cabins and food are amazing. On one night, a bonfire is held where you can share your scariest stories with your friends in the hope of making a few people scream. On another night you get to do trivia. Stories that you write on the camp will be printed for you in a book. Get a group of friends together and sign up!

Meeting Place: Greenhills, venue at the Cotter

Day and Time:  Excursion, TBA each year

Cost: Approximately $280 for the excursion

How does this activity promote student voice at CHS

Students give feedback that shapes the camp activities, and enable students to see pathways towards publishing their own writing. It is also an opportunity for students to network with other students across the year groups. Students are exposed to competitions and other writing opportunities that they can access.

2023 Camp Report

Writers’ Camp began with a three hour workshop hosted by Jack Heath. He discussed some tips and techniques to keep the reader engaged and build suspense. After lunch we had another session with him followed by free time and finally a delicious dinner. The second day started off with breakfast followed by a session from Emma Batchelor, winner of the Vogel's Literary Award with her biographical fiction book, Now that I see You. She talked about different ways to incorporate our own experiences into our writing. That afternoon we went on a bushwalk around the Cotter River, where we were inspired by the sights and sounds of nature. That evening we had a scary story competition around the fire. The next day we had a session with a former journalist who shared some great anecdotes with us and was very inspiring. I really enjoyed Writers’ Camp and wish I could go again!
