Debating Club

Debating @ Canberra High School is an opportunity for students to practice their skills in public speaking and critical thinking through competitive debate. Each week our teams are given a topic to debate against another ACT school. Teams will often have lunchtime meetings to discuss their strategies and arguments to prepare for upcoming debates. Registrations occur early in Term 1 and Term 3 for an 11 week competition.

Meeting Place: Rooms 110 -111

Day and Time:  Monday and Wednesdays 5 - 7pm and lunchtimes (announced in the student notices)

Cost: $55 - $60

How does this activity promote student voice at CHS

Students are provided agency as they take initiative in managing their own discussions and preparation for upcoming debates. They are provided with opportunities to reflect on past debates and identify strategies for improvement.

Excursions and opportunities

Weekly evening debates (locations subject to change for each semester's competition). Debates run from mid-Term 1 to mid-Term 2 and mid-Term 3 to mid-Term 4.

In the news

The Year 9 team was told they were so good the adjudicator didn’t realise it was their first debate ever! Despite this they were beaten by a team containing a champion debater from last year. Our year 10 too were beaten by a much experienced team but they learnt many lessons to take into their second debate. Our junior team were victorious!
