Spring Time in the School Gardens!
Every November students in lower grades learn that plants can grow from seeds, bulbs, spores, or plant parts. One of the activities in the Garden Science classes is to plant bulbs. This is the 1st grader's daffordil and tulip garden bed.
Garden Salad Garden Bed
Students in TK-1st Grade planted arugula, spinach, beets, and raddishes in the late winter and early spring. In May, they harvested their crops and ate a salad!
The Garden Science Committee hosts a quarterly event to teach students how to compost and to help generate compost for the school gardens.
For Earth Month, garden docents in participating classrooms taught students how to sort trash, how to compost, and what are decomposers. We also co-hosted a contest with the Go Green Committee to design new composting signs for the school. Students submitted their designs and the winner had their label design featured in the Alameda Post! Congratulations to the winners and all students who participated!
