The Garden Science Committee is a free PTA-sponsored STEAM-based program for all Aviators!
The Garden Club hosted a Spring Garden Party which was incredibly successful! We thank everyone who donated cardboard and shared their time with us. Many brought their entire families and we had well over 40 volunteers who helped us transform the science and kinder gardens. Below is a before and after image of the kinder garden after 1.5 hrs of weeding and adding mulch. THANK YOU!
In the science garden, we planted sunflowers, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, honeysuckle, chamomile, eggplants, and so much more! Thanks to all your hard work, the science garden is fully planted! THANK YOU!

Zero Waste Wednesday!
The zero waste concept promotes a way of life that reduces the amount of material that is thrown away. This week we discussed 2 methods for zero waste:
COMPOSTING
Composting reduces the amount of organic waste that goes to the landfills. Through a process of natural decomposition, organic food waste breaks down into soil. The resulting soil is rich in nutrients that can replenish the Earhart garden beds. This week Earhart students from each grade level donated GREEN and BROWN food scraps to help us start the school compost bin. The students layered the green and brown components into the compost bin, added soil and some water. In a few weeks we will have the first batch of compost! Many thanks to all who brought green and brown material!
REPLANT ELIGIBLE FOOD SCRAPS
Replanting vegetable, fruit, and herb scraps is a method to sustainably reduce food waste and regrow nutritious food. This week the Garden Club planted small pieces of sprouted golden potato scraps and sprouted garlic cloves! The potato pieces each had an "eye" or sprout which was planted facing up (it will become the leaves of the potato) 4-6 inches deep into the ground and 8 inches apart. The sprouted garlic cloves were planted 6 inches deep in the ground next to the broccolini companion plants in the kinder garden.
The GARDEN CLUB has an exciting week of events planned for Earth Week and we invite the Earhart community to join us! See flyers attached and details below!
1) CHAIRish YOUR BREAD TAGS - a bread tag recycling event started today through May 12th!
2) Wednesday, April 19th join us after school for a COMPOSTING demonstration and learn how to replant some of your food scraps! We invite all grade levels to help us start our school composting by bringing in “green” and “brown” items as suggested per grade level. Please bring materials in compostable or recyclable containers if possible.
3) We are finishing up our Earth Week with a school SPRING GARDEN PARTY! Families are invited to join us Saturday, April 22 from 9:30-11:00 am. We hope to have a large turnout to participate in planting, seeding, weeding and much more!
Thank you for your support!! See you at the garden!!
