The Garden Science Committee is a free PTA-sponsored STEAM-based program for all Aviators!
Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday break! We made some fish prints today. The kids painted a fish, and placed a sheet of paper on top of it to get an imprint. They all looked so colorful!
In December, our main focus will be to prep the garden for the winter. We will be removing diseased plants, laying out cardboard for weed prevention, and mulching. Please join us! We can use lots of extra hands. Here's a schedule of our upcoming activities for the month of December.
The Bonnie Cabbage Project will be starting up again next week. Each third grade class will try to grow a colossal cabbage. They will be measuring it each week and documenting the growth. How exciting! The kick off meeting will be on 12/4/23.
SCHOOL WIDE COMPOSTING EVENT UPDATE
Our first composting event of the school year was a success! Thank you to all the families that brought in green and brown materials! By the end of the two week period, we were able to fill up the entire black compost bin and add in materials to the tumbler. We will continue turning the compost to aerate it, and in a few months we'll have a fresh batch of compost. Another event will occur in a few months. Thank you for all your support!!
Thankgiving is quickly approaching. This month, we will have two Monday meetings. Just a friendly reminder, we do not meet on early release days and holidays. Please join us for our Saturday work day. We'll be prepping the garden beds for more planting. Help us spread the word!
The weather is becoming cooler, and the leaves are changing colors. See video below on why the leaves turn green to red, yellow orange or brown when the seasons change.
The kids explored further by organizing leaves in order of decomposition. Decomposition is the process of dead matter breaking up into smaller parts. These leaves will eventually decompose into nutrients for soil.
Then the kids picked their favorite leaf, and drew them in their garden journals.
Some Garden Updates
Most of the milkweed have been eaten up at the science garden; therefore, the kids have relocated them to the tropical gardens. Check them out!
School Wide Composting Event
Our composting event kicked off today! We had a great start to the first day. Collection boxes are located inside the gates near the office. The boxes will be emptied daily to prevent critters. Here's a photo of the green/brown material inside our compost bin that we received today. Please continue to bring green/brown material between Nov. 6-17th.
The kids from garden club helped move the compost out from the tumbler into a green bin to make space for the new green/brown material we are receiving. This compost was made from green/brown material received in the spring '23.
