Keynote- STEM Education with Equity for "A New Normal"
Okhee Lee, Professor in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at NYU
The purpose of the presentation is to envision STEM education that supports justice-centered decision-making and solutions to societally pressing phenomena and challenges. The presentation illustrates one approach to integrating STEM, language, computational thinking, and COVID-19 with a focus on English learners/multilingual learners. This approach highlights the role of STEM education to bring STEM disciplines and social justice together and presents one attempt to create “a new normal” for STEM education that centers social justice. The approach responds to the new Administration’s priorities that place science (COVID-19, climate, and health care) and justice (racial equity and immigration) at the core.
