“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”
- Edgar Degas
In the month of October, the IB CAS coordinator had organised an event where all students of Grade 11B volunteered to paint the walls in the school cafeteria. The students were divided into 3 different groups, and 3 different areas of the cafeteria were allocated to the groups.
This was a part of the CAS experience for the students, as it comes under the ‘Creativity’ strand of CAS. Each group opted for a particular theme to accompany the wall painting, with the main theme being ‘Mandala Art’. The students used references to plan out the particular design that would be put up on the wall. The time limit for this particular project was approximately 2 weeks.
The students first made an accurate outline of the design desired, and then proceeded to use acrylic paint over the walls. Since mandala art is composed of symmetrical patterns and shapes, the groups had to be precise in taking measurements and creating stencils that would make the painting seem more flawless. Some students resorted to using mathematics as their design consisted of specifically illusory patterns.
It was difficult for some of the groups to adhere to the strict time limit for completion, and this was due to the complex designs that all groups had. But, upon completion, the students were showered with compliments and praises for beautifying the cafeteria, as it had been brought to life through colours and intricate designs.
The experience has shown the students the importance of working in a group as well as the significance of time management.
TESTIMONY
"This was an amazing experience, an opportunity to work as a team and rejuvenate the artist within us. We worked in a creative and imaginative way, to beautify our own cafeteria."
