“ We must all do theatre, to find out who we are, and to discover who we could become” –
Augusto Boal
After 2 long years of the pandemic, our school initiated amazing school gatherings such a sports day and annual day with great enthusiasm. Consequently, after much preparation and persistence, our annual day was held on 20 th January, 2023 in the D Y Patil Auditorium. This year we adopted the theme of the 9 sentiments(rasas) of the human heart: ‘Hasya’(joy), ‘Bhayanaka’(fear), ‘Raudra’(anger), ‘Shringar’(love), ‘Vira’(courage), ‘Karuna’(sadness), ‘Adbhuta’(amazement), ‘Vibhatsya’(disgust) and ‘Shanti’(calmness). The script had a witty inclusion of narrators like ‘Prakriti’(nature), ‘Samachar’(news) and ‘Manushya’(human) that guided the emotions and explained their effects. Every act explored the journey of these emotions on earth in a variety of realistic and eye-opening scenarios which underlined the significance and immense power that our decisions hold as well as how crucial it is control oneself.
Our music participants(guitarists, pianists, drummers and of course, singers) began the event with a bang! Classic songs of Bollywood and Hollywood were performed, as they grooved to the tunes and hit every note to entertain the audience and to set the mood for the rest of the evening. The dancers performed contemporary, Bharatnatyam, Hip-Hop and other Bollywood dance forms with much energy, grace and elegance, as their learning from all their practises. Last but not the least, the actors nailed every intonation, expression and dialogue-delivery be it English, Hindi as well as Marathi.
The beautiful culmination of dance, drama and music lead to a harmonious play with every participant being extremely important for a smooth functioning of the play. The program too was a huge success with roars of laughter, applause and intrigued faces as the plot proceeded.
Testimony:
Following this, we interviewed Shreesh Shirekar, our head boy, of IBDP Year 2 and received the following responses.
1. Did you enjoy the annual day this time? Why?
Shreesh: “I loved this year's annual day! This was my second annual day experience as my first was Cats and after that it was unfortunately stopped due to the Pandemic. It truly was amazing watching all the students around me work hard to a common goal which was a great play!”
2. As the head boy, what skills do you think all students practiced/acquired collectively?
Shreesh: “I definitely believe everyone exercised and improved their skills on collaboration. This was an entire school group effort and this couldn't have been done without collaboration. I know there were bumps along the way but understanding the problems and working towards a solution as a school made me truly proud of the students of DYPIS.”
