The Heart of the Diploma: Foundations of the DP Core

This summer, you will begin your journey with Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), and the Extended Essay (EE). These introductory tasks are designed to shift your perspective, encouraging you to question the nature of knowledge, identify personal growth goals beyond the classroom, and begin exploring the research topics that fascinate you most. Engaging with these components now will provide the essential framework you need to navigate the next two years with curiosity, balance, and academic independence.

Summer Task/Project

Welcome to TOK.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is not a traditional subject.

It is a course about:

How we know what we claim to know
Why people disagree about truth and knowledge
The role of evidence, perspective, culture, language, and values
The strengths and limitations of different Areas of Knowledge

TOK rewards curiosity, questioning, discussion, reflection, and open-minded thinking.

Recommended Summer Activities.

1. Keep a “Knowledge Journal”

Every week, record:

A surprising claim you heard
A disagreement you observed
A news story that raised questions
Something you changed your mind about

For each entry, reflect:

How do people know this?
What counts as evidence?
Can different people interpret this differently?
How reliable is the source?
Does emotion influence belief?

This is one of the best ways to develop a TOK mindset.
