The purpose of this summer task is to prepare students for the academic demands of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme by developing their reading, analytical thinking, and writing skills.

Part 1: Reading Task

1. Read a variety of texts related to the five IB themes:

   • Identities

   • Experiences

   • Social Organization

   • Human Ingenuity

   • Sharing the Planet

2. Maintain a Reading Journal that includes:

   • A brief summary of each text or article read.

   • The main ideas and issues discussed.

   • New vocabulary and expressions.

   • Personal reflections on what was learned from the reading.

3. Read the novel Men in the Sun by Ghassan Kanafani and prepare a reading report that includes:

   • A summary of the novel.

   • An analysis of the main characters.

   • The key themes and issues explored in the novel.

   • A personal response supported by evidence from the text.

Part 2: Writing Task

1. Write an email to a friend who is travelling abroad, checking on them and their family. The email should:

   • Follow the conventions of email writing.

   • Use clear and accurate language.

   • Express thoughts and feelings appropriately.

2. Write a newspaper article titled:
   "Travel and Its Role in Broadening People's Horizons"
   The article should include:

   • An engaging introduction.

   • Well-developed ideas supported with examples.

   • The benefits of travel and learning about different cultures.

   • A concluding paragraph that summarizes the main points.

Part 3: Vocabulary Development

Create a vocabulary log containing 50 new words or expressions encountered during your summer reading. For each entry, include:

• The meaning of the word or expression.

• An original sentence demonstrating its correct use.

Submission

All tasks must be submitted during the first week of Grade 11. Students should also be prepared to discuss aspects of their work in class during the first weeks of the academic year.
