The Dublin City School district utilizes the Ohio State Standards, which were adapted from the National Common Core standards, in Language Arts. I teach these standards in the following ways. I use a balanced, comprehensive approach. We focus on speaking, listening, reading and writing. Quality literature, author studies, word study (high frequency words, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary), fluency and most importantly, comprehension are all emphasized. Literacy workshops, whole and small group mini lessons along with individualized activities, conferences, shared reading and writing, interactive reading and writing, independent writing, modeling, technology and author studies are all aspects of our language arts program. Reading and Writing are differentiated based on student needs. Dublin uses the My View program by Savvas for Reading and Writing and 95 Phonics Core Program for Word Study.
Oral Sharing - Daily classroom participation as well as classroom presentations (letter, kindergartner of the week, content, and Newsminutes).
Reading Mini-lessons will be followed by Individual Reading Conferences and Small Groups (Meet with Teacher) as remaining children practice reading skills in the workshop setting.
Scholastic is an economical way to build up your child's library.
We have monthly selections. All orders are placed on line but are shipped to the school. Arrangements can be made if the books are a gift for your student, just let me know.
To shop go to scholastic.com. Our class code is GVDNZ.
You can access author websites below.
Word Study - 95 Phonics, Four Ways of Knowing Letters (Identify, Sound, Formation and Name a Word beginning with the letter), Rhyming, Syllables, High Frequency and Word Families and Letter Presentations (assignments went home in August- blue sheet).
Writing Mini-lessons followed by Shared/Interactive Writing, Guided and/or Independent Practice. Expectations are developmental. Invented spelling is encouraged for primary children. We use writing workshop, shared and interactive writing, environmental print and classroom resources (word wall, signs, posters and literature) and lots of practice. We focus on narrative, opinion and informational writing.
Dublin uses the 95 Phonics Core Stroke Talk for Letter Formation (copy on the left). At home, please reinforce that letters and numbers should begin at the top. On Fridays, handwriting practice is primarily the weekend homework.
