In 1997, Dublin’s fourth middle school opened. It was named after Dr. Henry Karrer, whose mother, Estella, was a descendent of the Sells family.
Henry started first grade when he was four years old. His parents sent him with his older sister Marie because she was extremely shy. He graduated from Dublin High School at age 16 in 1924. He finished college in three years at The Ohio State University and was then accepted into medical school there. He completed his medical degree in 1931.
He practiced medicine in Dublin from 1932 to 1964. His first office was near the Dublin Village Tavern at 35 South High Street which had been a barber shop. It had two small rooms, a small stove, and a fan to move the heat around. Dr. Karrer was known to his patients as a gentle and caring man. He made house calls and visited patients in the hospital. He worked long hours, sometimes seeing 30 to 40 patients in a day. He allowed people to pay what they could for medical care. His fees were $1.00 for an office call and $2.00 for a house call.
