Indian Run Elementary was named for its location on the rim of Indian Run Ravine and Falls. John Shonkwiler, a student from Dublin High School, named the school, after winning the “Name Dublin’s First Elementary School” contest.
This building was the first one built specifically for elementary students and opened on March 12, 1961. The first kindergarten classes in Dublin were located at Indian Run Elementary.
Indian Run flows into the Scioto River just north of Dublin. This made it very easy for settlers to access the river for trade and travel purposes. Most of the early settlers built their cabins on Indian Run to ensure protection. The Wyandot Indian tribe often set up camp on Indian Run under the leadership of Chief Billy Wyandot. In spring many other tribes would travel through Dublin in order to trade their goods, including furs, maple sugar, and ammunition.
