Special Education Processes

Parents, guardians, students, professional and support staff in the Dallas School District are proud of their roles in making special education services and special programming within our community comprehensive and successful for our students.

Special education programs and services are unique in the educational system and can allow your child to take positive steps towards successful adult living.  We are sensitive that the special education system may seem overwhelming at times.  It is our desire that, through supportive staff and administration, we are able to help guide families through special education processes as we work together to provide appropriate programming for students.  Parental participation in this system is not only helpful, but necessary.

To learn more about our specific programs click on our program and service tab for a full overview of our special education programs and supports.

What do I do if I suspect my child has a disability?

To identify students who may be eligible for special education, various screening activities are conducted on an ongoing basis. These screening activities include: review of group-based data (cumulative records, enrollment records, health records, report cards, ability and achievement test scores); hearing, vision, physical and speech/Language screening. When screening results suggest that the student may be exceptional, the district seeks parental consent to conduct a multidisciplinary evaluation.

In the event you feel you need more supports for your child, below is the sequential points of contact to seek assistance.
