Drew requires each student to complete 100 service hours because it promotes a sense of responsibility within the community to help each other in times of need. Volunteering also ensures that students are involved in their communities and it encourages teamwork and leadership which are important skills for personal growth. Having a service hour requirement in order to graduate ensures that students at Drew are well-rounded individuals who are passionate about helping their communities.
I volunteered to host my own STEAM day workshop about coding for Drew students in the first and second grades on STEAM day. I designed engaging and educational activities that encouraged young children's interest in the technology industry using the coding skills I learned in my computer science classes.
I hosted a STEAM workshop for preschool students about structural engineering. I created a fun activity for them to learn about the importance of prototyping in engineering. I did so by allowing students to build tall marshmallow towers using spaghetti straps to show how architects must understand how gravity and lateral forces might impact the structure in the real world.
During Covid-19, I volunteered at the YMCA everyday Thursday during the summer to pack food items in bags & place them in separate order to distribute to different community programs & drive-thru trucks. I packed over 100 food bags everyday for distribution during the summer.
Every Saturday, I tutor English to a Ukrainian student of my age through a program called ENGin, a nonprofit that connects Ukrainian English learners with proficient English speakers. In our sessions, we discuss various topics to help my student improve their confidence in speaking, as well as enhance their grammar and reading skills. As a tutor, this experience has also helped me become more confident in leading discussions and speaking in public.
I sang in a group at a charity event where all profit from tickets and food bought at the event was donated to Gift Sri Lanka Foundation. This organization is committed to building affordable housing for families in need, ensuring they have a secure place to call home. They are also committed to providing educational materials, funding scholarships, and supporting schools in underserved areas.
I helped create over 100 essential oil room sprays as a token of appreciation for our teachers. Additionally, I assisted in setting up the Scholastic Book Fair in the library, ensuring the space was inviting and ready for students when the fair began the following week.
