We are learning how to use the bandsaw and how to make bandsaw boxes to be used in our final project.
We will learn how to use these tools safely so that we can make something unique.
This is what we will have learned by the end of this project. This will show our mastery with the tools used.
I used the bandsaw to cut out a puzzle. I had to follow the lines and put it back together. We did this puzzle to practice using the bandsaw.
I used the bandsaw to cut my piece of a puzzle. I had to follow along a line and show my cut. We did the activity to practice cuts with the bandsaw.
You use a bandsaw to make cuts through wood. Some do's are to wear glasses/goggles, go through slowly, and turn off and unplug when done. Some dont's are touching a person while they use it, leaving it on when done, and not leaving hands out of way.
I used to planer saw to shave down and smoothen my piece of wood. I also removed stains that were present before I used the planer saw. I can now run my fingers up and down all parts of the planer saw without worry.
Today I used the miter saw to make a nine inch cut through my wood. I had to set up properly, and safely cut through my piece of wood.
The miter saw is used to make straight cuts through wood. You can slide it back and forth and cut an exact amount of wood off at a time. Some do's of using the miter saw are to wear eye and ear protection, keep hands wide of guard line, unplug after use, and to cut through slowly. Some dont's are to not touch the blade, don't move blade guard, touch someone while they are using it, and don't cut wood with nails.
I used the pieces of my cut to glue and clamp them together. We used wood glue and left the wood overnight to dry together.
I made a perspective drawing of a simple word. This is one of my first attempts at perspective drawing. There is a point at the top where all of the lines meet. My word chosen was HOT.
I made a perspective drawing of my name. My name is fairly simple, so this did not take too much time. Every corner went to a point at the center top of the screen. My name is JULIAN.
I used the miter saw to cut a piece off of my wood block. I had to wear the proper protection and be very cautious while making my cut.
We used the orbital sander to smoothen out my two wood pieces. After using the sander, they felt like they were the same piece of wood.
We used the cricut machine to make name stencils. We used vinyl as the material for the stencil.
We then traced out our names using a box cutter. Then we pasted the vinyl down to a piece of cardboard. After that, we spray-painted over the vinyl.
Before we cut, I traced out a boat shaped piece of wood.
I used the bandsaw to cut a boat shaped object out. I had to use proper safety and take my time.
I used wood glue and clamps to glue down my box back together. I had to be careful to line it up closely.
I used the 3d printer to make a handle for my box. I made a handle that no one else would; a ping pong paddle. I had to put my own touch on it so my initials are on in my handwriting.
A 3d printer can turn a digital design into real life in just hours. It uses a material such as melted plastic.
Do's
Select your file and save it to a sd card
Remember to add support to your design
Dont's
Touch printer while in use
Touch figure while in use
Touch someone else's 3d printer
We used fabric and wood stain to stain our wood. I made sure to evenly coat all of the wood. After staining we set it up on cardboard to dry.
Do's
Apply with the grain of the wood
Wear gloves
Wear Apron
Wear Eyewear
Dont's
Touch wood stain with hands
Leave materials out in open when done
I spray painted my name on my box. I used a vinyl to get my name and used duck tape to cover to rest of my box. I made one coat across and waited for it to dry to remove tape.
I used glue to attach my 3d printed handle to my box lid. This will be used to open up my box.
4/17 Today we learned about our next project. We are making coasters out of wood. We are using the planer saw, the table saw, the orbital sander, and the floor drill press.
The planer saw is used to trim wood boards to a consistent thickness. If a board has a paint stain, the planer saw will remove the stain. It will allow you to run your fingers across a board without any worry of splinters. Some things you need to do when using the planer saw are to attach the vacuum before using, only cutting up to 1/16" at a time, wearing ear plugs and safety glasses, and unplugging machine when finished with the cut. Some don'ts are keep fingers away from opening, pass other materials through opening, and don' pass wood with nails through opening.
The orbital sander is used to sand and smoothen out pieces of wood. Some do's while using the orbital sander are to keep a firm grip on sander, hold the wood down, and wear eye protection. Some dont's are to not play around while using, don't touch sander while using, and don't leave sander unattended.
(Above are pictures of the wood we will use; Pine and Walnut)
This image is my sketch of my coaster. The shaded areas represent walnut wood and the light areas are pine wood. The coaster is 3 3/4 in on all sides but each section is 3/4 in wide.
I cut out my different types of wood, clamped them together, and then I cut them into quarters. I used a table saw to make my cuts.
I applied my first coat of polyurethane to my wood to protect it from scratches or water damage.
