Innovation Project

What is “innovation” really?

Why are is the definition of innovation disputed? Or why are there so many definitions of Innovation?

The definition of innovation is often disputed because people have different ideas of what they think is useful and when something doesn't fit their criteria, they wouldn't consider it "innovation"

After thinking about their perspectives and their definitions, which one resonates with you personally the most. Write this definition here: Something new or different that delivers value to the world, with the key criteria that I’m not innovating if I’m not bettering people’s lives. Put simply, it is the future delivered.

Writer Name: Jorge Barba

What type of industry are they associated with? Post a picture of them.

Jorge is an Entrepreneur, Puzzle Builder, Generalist, Mentor and Advisor. He works to come up with new ideas.

What did they do/create/lead/innovate to become so successful?

He uses his company/website game-changer as a way to blog and spread entrepreneurship and innovation ideas through blogging.

Knowing what you know about this person, what insights did you gain into their definition?

He believes that his blog is bettering other people's lives by introducing them to his ideas around innovation and creativity.

How does LEMELSON-MIT define Innovation?

Enhancing inventiveness for quality of life, competitiveness, and sustainability.

LEMELSON-MIT Invention Proposal:

Read the above paragraph. If you were to interpret a definition of what Lemelson-MIT wants in terms of innovation, how does it differ from those that are written in the source above?

It should be something that isn't so much about creativeness or uniqueness, it should be something that has an audience that it benefits.

Personal Frustrations (March 26-March 31):

1: Google classroom shows assignments as incomplete because I didn't need to turn it in. Maybe there can be a system for it to not show the assignment where we check it off but not turn it in.

Personal Frustrations (March 26-March 31):

2: Recently, our toliet lever fell off and we've had to use a piece of rusted metel to flush the toliet. However, this did allow me to have a basic understanding of how that lever worked with the valve.

Personal Frustrations (March 26-March 31):

3: Ms.Cain has been giving out links to her screenrecording Youtube videos with no sound. So what we've had to do was to search up the videos on Youtube and manually search for the part that she screenrecorded and then we can watch the video and do our long assignments. Here is a link to that video drive.google.com/file/d/1KmhMAUYyuwAEZ_zKyYUkoEaI9jAnPAXS/view

Individual problems that people we know have:

Local Problems:

Regional Problems:

National Problems:

Worldwide Problems:

World Problems:

What are the three most pressing problems that the world needs to address for the poorer ½ of the worlds population according to Manoj.

The three most pressing problems that the world needs to address for the poor people is power, water and health.

Collect at least six supporting pieces of data that describe these problems as you participate in the Billions in Change Ed. Puzzle?

  • Half of the world either doesn't have energy or only has energy for 2-3 hours in a day.
  • Twenty-five billion pounds of waste is being produced every year.
  • The poor stays poor because they have no power and water.
  • Electricity is the greatest enabler there is and we kept half of the world out of it
  • People are taking fresh water out of the environment which causes droughts
  • Instead of taking fresh water, we can turn salty sea water into fresh water in the matter of seconds to support nations with water shortages.

What is Manoj’s main question when evaluating an invention?

It is useful?

What is Covid-19?

Covid-19 stands for Coronavirus Disease 2019, it is now a pandemic across the world.

How bad is it? Use cite information found in a reliable source to demonstrate the seriousness of this pandemic.

As of April 1st, 900 thousand people have been infected and 45 thousand deaths. www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ (This is a website that actively tracks the amount of cases reported in each country and every state in America.)

How does it affect the host? Describe both symptoms and statistics about death rates of those infected. The more information you can provide the better.

Covid-19 has symptoms that are close to a common cold with the exception of a dry cough. The common symptoms are fever, cough and shortness of breath with extreme cases leading to pneumonia. It currently has a mortality rate of 3.4% according to the World Health Organization and around 2/3 of deaths are males and more than 80% of those males were 60 or older.

Describe a sub-problem that is being created by this virus:

Self-isolation / Quarantine and Social-distancing are reducing the need for gasoline as airlines began to reduce flights and people staying at home more. This turned into a global oil crash when the oil production cut agreement between Saudi Arabia and Russia failed in March. This is causing oil prices to plummet as oil tanks fill up and many American oil production companies aren't able to keep up with the price. Many of the smaller companies are near bankruptcy and we likely wouldn't see a solution until the NOPEC deal is signed. However, this would create another problem, OPEC has been regulating the price for oil for years and without the organization, we would likely see the price of oil skyrocket once airlines recover and people are free to go out again.

Identify at least three sources that either show (video) or describe innovation that is occurring in response to Covid-19. These must tie directly to the sub problem stated or described in number 4. Identify/paste a link to your sources and do not copy paste text, instead paraphrase the information that you provide.

It includes statistics about the oil war such as a 60% decrease in crude oil prices and the a large market share being taken by American oil production companies. www.cnbc.com/2020/04/01/5-charts-that-explain-the-saudi-arabia-russia-oil-price-war-so-far.html
