Life means struggle, a new journey starts as you enter college life. Struggle to the right path, Struggle to prove yourself, Struggle to adjust, and many more. So, Affine - The Mathematics Association organizes various sessions and webinars every year where speakers at higher levels contribute their precious time to the students and they get to learn a lot with their experience and their achievements for our future that is still blurred in our vision.
In session 2021-22, sessions were organized about various types of Machine Learning such as supervised learning, unsupervised learning and the Scope of Mathematics in Computer Science by Prof. T.V. Kumar. Insights on the Current Trends in Science and Technology were shared by Dr. S.K. Varshney and also on the current National Education Policy coming into play with the upcoming year in Delhi University that will bring new changes for a new generation by Prof. Shobha Bagai.
In session 2020-21 we got the track of AHP i.e., Analytical Hierarchy Process with different examples of mathematics like matrices and cars along with the decomposition of hierarchy. Various skill enhancement workshops were organized for the freshers to make them aware of college societies with the help of seniors that are part of them already as guest speakers and the first seminar was about Group Theory and the Seven Bridges Problem by Prof. Geetha Venkataraman.
Prof. Dr. Rashmi Bhardwaj was our guest speaker who talked about bridging the gap for solving real life problems to help us grow and overcome this gap of ancient and latest mathematics. She provided us with knowledge how and where we use mathematics as in its applications from old times to new times and how it developed.
Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations and algorithms, it's all about understanding. To elevate our interests and enhance our skills, a webinar was conducted on 21st October 2021 on the topic "Beauty of Mathematics" with the speaker Prof. S. S. Khare, Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India and Former Pro-Vice Chancellor, NEHU (Shillong) who is an eminent Mathematics Scholar with 50 years of experience as an academician, researcher, speaker and thought leader of Mathematics. He surcharged the idea that Mathematics possesses not only truth but is a Supreme Beauty - A Beauty Cold and Austere, like that of sculpture, without appealing to any part of our weaker nature, without the gorgeous trappings of painting or music, yet sublimely pure, and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show. And talked about the glory of Mathematics. Further, Fibonacci series, golden ratio and their presence in nature, architect, human body and music were discussed.
It was interesting and intriguing to know Fibonacci numbers in leaf arrangement, petals of flowers, spiral of flowers and the amalgamation of Fibonacci series and Golden ratio in human body and architect.
Hence, it was an informative, interactive and an overwhelming session with an attempt to pour out our zeal to learn more. Certainly, it has unfolded the major intriguing mysteries of Mathematics and left us with provoked thoughts that all our life we rushed to understand mathematics, but it resembled the major prospects of life.
Glimpse of the Session
Affine - The Mathematics Association, Daulat Ram College organized a webinar on “Mathematical Modeling, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning” on 22nd September 2021 from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. The guest speaker was Prof. T.V. Kumar who is the Professor and Dean of School of Computer and System Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University with keen interests in Databases, Data Warehousing, Data Mining, Machine Learning, Nature Inspired Algorithms, Disaster Management, Big Data and Analytics.
In this everchanging scenario, where science and technology are revolutionizing our lives to achieve a new direction, Affine - The Mathematics Association, Daulat Ram College organized a webinar on “Current Trends in Science and Technology” on 3rd September 2021. The keynote speaker of the webinar was Dr. S.K. Varshney, is currently designated as Advisor and Scientist at the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
The Mathematics Department of Daulat Ram College, AFFINE, conducted its first seminar of the session on 20th September 2019. An enlightening talk was given by Dr. Tanvi Jain of The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) Delhi on the topic - A Journey with Infinite Series.
She began her presentation by giving us a brief description of the history of the series in India and across the world and how mathematicians discovered various ways to find the sum of the finite as well as the infinite series. Her explanations were absolutely clear, and she gave abundant examples on every topic. to make the session interesting and to ignite the curiosity of the young attendees, she introduced various puzzles and questions in her presentation.
She talked about the Fibonacci Series and its presence in nature such as in the number of petals of flower. She encouraged the audience into thinking about the topic and its application in day to day lives. As, mathematics students, we were intrigued by the very vast scope of the series and how is it present around all of us.
3rd October 2018, A Seminar was conducted by Prof. Shobha Bagai from Department of Mathematics Cluster Innovation Centre on the topic “Biogeography: Mathematical Modelling of Wildlife Reserves”. It was an interactive and a very informative session as students got to understand and explore another application of mathematics. She conversed and discussed in detail about how a mathematical model can be created considering various parameters of biographical region or any such real-life situation.
30th January 2019, A session was held by Career endeavor team especially for second year students who stand at the turning point of their careers. They motivated the students to introspect and decide what they want in life and where do they see themselves in future leading a satisfactory and happy life. They discussed various career options after completing graduation in Mathematics focusing on various aspects of choosing M.Sc. in Mathematics. They discussed the pattern, score required for different examinations for entering into reputed colleges.
