In this everchanging scenario, where science and technology are revolutionizing our lives to achieve a new direction, Affine-The Mathematics Association, Daulat Ram College organized a webinar on “Current Trends in Science and Technology” on 3rd September 2021. The keynote speaker of the webinar was Dr. S.K. Varshney, is currently designated as Advisor and Scientist at the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
Dr. S.K. Varshney talked about the challenge we face in this modern world due to the exploitation of resources done by mankind and using scientific knowledge to counter them for the sustainable development and welfare of society. The second challenge he discussed was water, people are not literate in the methods of using water and use of different rainwater harvesting techniques and changing some of our basic habits to save water. He spoke about some of his notable projects such as their team growing trees on the banks of the Yamuna to reduce pollution and return minerals to the soil and the biggest self-powered desalination plant set up on Lakshadweep islands to convert seawater into drinking water.
The next challenge he covered was Energy, and the growth of India in solar power technologies, how space research helped to notify the fisherman about the weather conditions on their cell phones and specify the areas where there is an abundance of fish.
After the session, he encouraged students to clear their doubts and clarified many doubts of the students. It was a very informative session where students came to know about different aspects of science and technology that can be used for sustainability and the betterment of humankind. At the end, Dr. Sarita Nanda, Vice Principal of Daulat Ram College, blessed the students with her words of wisdom. The session culminated with a vote of thanks presented by Dr. Vikas Dhaka, Convener and Association InCharge, Department of Mathematics, DRC and a group picture.
