The power of a picture book to discuss different topics can work with older students as well. Many books are longer and delve into topics that can engage students on a deeper level. It also gives kids a way to talk about tougher topics without having to make it personal–they can talk about a situation through the experiences of the characters in the book.
When selecting books, keep your audience in mind. Younger students have shorter attention spans, so shorter books work better. The purpose of the read aloud also matters. In lower grades, funnier books go over better than more serious ones unless you’re really trying to teach a specific topic or skill. Older students also love funny books, but you can get away with longer text and more serious topics.
