Day 2 - Block/Bubble Letter Name

For Day 2, I'd like to build off yesterday's block and bubble letter practice, and move on to create a composition using our names (or any word for that matter).

I chose my own name, and decided to use a bubble-style font. Using the same techniques demonstrated yesterday, I started with a lightly sketched MERRY, and then lightly added ovals around every line. Using a fine point Sharpie and washable markers, I added some patterns and color to my piece.

*I also demonstrated that if you want to keep your letters uniform, adding guidelines can be helpful. Draw two parallel lines (use a ruler if so desired), one above the other. Each letter you draw should start at the line below and reach to the line above, consistently. Typically you would then erase the guidelines but I kept them in my example for design purposes.

Adaptations - While this lesson is geared towards middle and high school age student-artists, there is no reason younger children cannot attempt and find success with it. I've done block and bubble lettering with elementary aged kiddos, and have been treated to some wonderful work. An older kid or adult can always draw out a basic template and allow the younger artists to trace and color parts of it for a fabulous collaboration - you will still be encouraging fine motor skills!
