When two people share something, they can share it equally. This would be represented by the ratio of 1:1. However sometimes, ratios can be split in different ways. Perhaps a person deserves a larger share of some lotto winnings because they invested more in the ticket? Dividing a quantity in a given ratio can be calculated in various ways; using the unitary method to find each part, using fractions of the amount.

Always write down the provided ratio in the question with headings. Then write the given ratio underneath according to the information provided. Always answer questions using units where required. To divide a quantity into a given ratio, remember to do the following; sum the parts of the ratio (add the parts together) divide the quantity by the sum (i.e. the number of parts) then multiply each part of the ratio by the result. This will give you the value of each portion of the quantity corresponding to each part of the ratio.
