CENTRAL MEASURES OF TENDENCY AND SPREAD

You were introduced to the terms mean, mode, range and median in last fortnight's work and in class. The three measures, mean, median, and mode are measures of central tendency, while range is a measure of spread. 

Mean:

• What it is: The average of a data set.

• How to find it: Add all the values together, then divide the sum by the total number of values. 

Median:

• What it is: The middle value in a data set. 

• How to find it:

  • Arrange the numbers in order from smallest to largest. 

  • If there is an odd number of values, the median is the single middle number. 

  • If there is an even number of values, the median is the average of the two middle numbers. 

Mode:

• What it is: The number that appears most often in the data set. 

• How to find it: Count how many times each number appears and identify the one with the highest frequency. A data set can have more than one mode, or no mode at all. 

Range:

• What it is: A measure of how spread out the data is.

• How to find it: Subtract the smallest value in the data set from the largest value.
