Metric conversions involve changing a measurement from one metric unit to another within the same system, such as converting meters to centimetres or kilograms to grams. The key is understanding that metric units are based on powers of ten. The core units are metre (m) for length in mathematics, and millimetres (mm) for subjects like timber / construction.
For converting units of length, you need to have an understanding of the metric system, and the fact that there are 10mm in 1cm, 100cm in 1m and 1000m in 1km.
In geometry, the perimeter of a shape is defined as the total length of its boundary. The perimeter of a shape is determined by adding the length of all the sides and edges enclosing the shape. It is measured in linear units of measurement like millimetres, centimetres, metres or even kilometres.
You will need to use your spatial abilities to visualise measurements by adding, subtracting or even just moving lengths across for different shapes as can be seen on the left.
Area is the amount of space taken up by a 2D shape. 2D shapes are completely flat. To work out the area of a square or a rectangle, multiply its height by its width. If the height and width are in centimetres (cm), the area is shown in cm². If the height and width are in metres (m), the area is shown in m².
