English Advanced

ALL STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE 2 UNITS OF ENGLISH

This course is best suited to students who have excellent written and communication skills; who possess a genuine passion for literature; and those who have an ability to think critically and analytically. English Advanced is a challenging and rigorous course. Students who choose this level of English will have achieved predominantly A or B grades in Stage 5 English.

Exclusions: English Standard, English Studies.

English Advanced is designed for students to undertake the challenge of higher-order thinking to enhance their personal social, educational and vocational lives. These students apply critical and creative skills in their composition of and response to texts in order to develop their academic achievement through understanding the nature and function of complex texts. Students who choose this course have a genuine passion for the study of English; they read widely and have the ability to think critically.

Year 11 Modules:


  • Common Module – Reading to Write: Transition to Senior English

  • Module A: Narratives that Shape our World

  • Module B: Close Study of Literature


There are no prescribed texts for Year 11.

Students must explore a range of types of texts drawn from prose fiction, drama, poetry, nonfiction, film, media and digital texts.

The Year 11 Course requires students to support the study of texts with their own wide reading.


HSC Modules:

  • Common module - Texts and Human Experiences

  • Module A - Textual Conversations

  • Module B - Critical Study of Literature

  • Module C - The Craft of Writing


Students are required to closely study four types of prescribed texts, one drawn from each of the following categories:

· Shakespearean drama

· Prose fiction OR print nonfiction

· Poetry OR drama

The remaining text may be film, media or digital text or may be selected from one of the categories above.

The selection of texts for Module C: The Craft of Writing may be drawn from any types of texts and do not contribute to the pattern of prescribed texts for the course.

Students must study ONE related text in the Common Module: Texts and Human Experiences.
