Phonological Spelling Knowledge
Phonological processing requires an understanding of phonemic awareness (involving being able to hear the sounds in words and manipulate them) and alphabetic awareness (knowledge of letter–sound correspondence). A combination of these two concepts is necessary to develop students’ skills and enhance later reading and writing performance.
Strategies:
Provide the students with a glossary of key terms
Ask the students to do the following:
Say the word (example: photosynthesis). Tell students that they will be spelling the word 'photosynthesis' today....
Blend the sounds. Ask students to slowly blend the sounds in the word with you. ...
Identify the number of sounds....
Identify the individual sounds....
Spell the word....
Blend and check the spelling....
Repeat.
