Using a KWL chart can help a student's pre-reading process tremendously. Students create a table with three columns, as follows:
K column: write down everything they already know about the topic they are about to explore.
W column: write down what they want to learn from the upcoming reading/viewing session.
L column: leave this blank until the reading/viewing session is over. Once students have completed the reading/viewing, they return to this section and write down the things that they have learned
