APPROACH
Theoretical/project-based
This course aims at introducing the students to the textile world as a primary element in fashion and textile design, and making them aware of how creativity in fashion is linked to sound understanding of textiles and of their best use, also developing awareness and sensitivity. Through the Textile culture module, the course favours a theoretical and project-based approach both to the understanding of fibres and textiles, and to the in-depth study of the textile supply chain, the value of the Italian manufacturing industry know-how, and to research in terms of innovation and sustainability. The workshops in the Textile lab 1 module let the students investigate different techniques in terms of structure and manipulation of textiles, such as weaving, embroidery, dying, and colour samples.
Successful students will be able to:
TEXTILE LAB 1:
Learn a method to design textiles
Use weaving techniques
Use textile manipulation techniques
Dye textile samples and yarns in different compositions
Create colour sample folders
Conceive and develop a book of textile samples
TEXTILE CULTURE:
Identify the product characteristics of textiles
Know the main weaving types of textiles and knitwear features
Select the most suitable textiles for different uses
Identify the main types of textiles by their look and feel
Know the geography, structure, and facts of the Italian textile production chain
Go in-depth on innovation and sustainability in the textile field
TEXTILE LAB 1
Through front lectures, workshops, and projects in collaboration with companies, the students will learn weaving techniques, how to work with materials, embroidery, and dying. This will allow them to choose the right materials and textiles for fashion projects.
TEXTILE CULTURE
Through front lectures, practical exercises, and projects in collaboration with companies, this module analyses the characteristics of fabrics and knitted materials (composition, weight, performance, instructions, technical data...) allowing the students to evaluate their use and performance. The module is enriched by the study of the relevant industry, as well as of the innovative and sustainable aspects.
This is a theoretical/project-based course.
Over the course, the students will carry out didactic activities that are functional to achieving the learning goals, that in both modules may include:
Front lectures
Development of individual projects
Individual study and research
Laboratories
Exercises and revisions
Individual sessions and tutoring
Field trips
Assessment criteria may include:
TEXTILE LAB 1: Submission of papers, projects and research work
TEXTILE CULTURE: Submission of papers, exercises and research work
Further details on the specific tests will be given by the professor.
The final grade for this course will result from the weighted average of its modules.
