Step 1: Individual Reading
You will be assigned a short reading from one of the references covering one of the following topics:
Excerpt 1: Digital Learning Tools
“Technology has revolutionized materials development by making digital tools more accessible in the classroom. Educators now utilize apps, learning management systems (LMS), and multimedia resources to enhance language learning. These tools allow for interactive, multimodal instruction that can cater to various learning styles. However, challenges arise in implementation—such as the lack of internet connectivity, device incompatibility, and digital literacy among teachers or learners. Effective integration depends not only on access but on purposeful use aligned with learning outcomes.”
Excerpt 2: Culturally Responsive or Localized Content
“Culturally responsive materials reflect the learners' social realities, languages, and everyday experiences. Rather than relying solely on global textbooks, educators are encouraged to design or adapt content that resonates with local values, beliefs, and contexts. This enhances relevance and learner engagement. Nonetheless, the creation of such materials requires deep cultural insight and sensitivity, and many commercially produced resources still lack adequate representation of marginalized voices or non-Western cultures.”
Excerpt 3: Learner-Adaptive Systems
“Learner-adaptive systems involve technologies that adjust content and pacing based on individual student performance. These may include AI-based tutors, diagnostic quizzes, and gamified platforms that offer personalized feedback. They promise increased learner autonomy and differentiated instruction. However, developing and maintaining these systems is costly and requires technical expertise. There are also concerns about over-reliance on automation and the potential for data privacy issues.”
Excerpt 4: Open Educational Resources (OERs)
“OERs are freely accessible, openly licensed materials that educators can use, adapt, and redistribute. They promote inclusivity and reduce textbook costs. OERs also encourage innovation, as teachers can tailor content to suit their students. However, issues such as inconsistent quality, lack of peer review, and unclear authorship often arise. Furthermore, some educators may be unfamiliar with the technical or legal aspects of modifying and using OERs responsibly.”
As you read, take brief notes on:
The core idea of the trend or issue
Potential benefits to learners and educators
Possible drawbacks or challenges
Step 2: Jigsaw Group Sharing
Form a jigsaw group where each member has read about a different topic.
Share your insights with your group members
Take notes on the other trends/issues discussed
Discuss how these trends impact real-life teaching or learning
Step 3: Collaborative Infographic Creation
As a group, design an infographic that compares at least two of the trends/issues discussed. Your infographic must include:
Clear titles/headings
Bullet points or icons/visuals summarizing:
The nature of the trends/issues
Their benefits
Their challenges or drawbacks
A brief caption or footnote citing your reading sources (e.g., Adapted from Cabrera, 2021)
