Schools that support family engagement in boosting at-home digital use can expect better outcomes.

Guiding questions:
How do you continuously communicate details about the VILS program to your families and community?
Our goal is to maintain open and transparent communication with our families and community about the VILS program. We believe that by keeping everyone informed, we can work together to create a positive and impactful learning environment for our students.. One of the primary ways we keep our families and community updated is through social media posts. We regularly share updates, success stories, and important information about the VILS program on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. This allows us to reach a wide audience and engage with our community in real-time.
How are you engaging family and community to enhance and support technology integration?
As the VILS Coach at Tubman, I recognize that technology is not just a tool for learning but also a means to connect and collaborate with our broader community. We have leveraged social media and our school website to keep families and the community informed about our technology initiatives. We regularly share updates, resources, and success stories to showcase the impact of technology on student learning and engagement.
What systems are in place to assess the technology needs of your school community?
During the registration process, we ask students if they have access to WiFi at home. This information helps us understand the digital divide within our student population and allows us to provide additional support to students who may not have reliable internet access such as onboarding students on how to use the VILS mobile data.
Also, any students identified as qualifying for the McKinney-Vento fund will have any technology-related fees waived and the school will provide financial coverage.

VILS Coach created a Family Guide to Student Technology
This guide gives families a snapshot to important digital platforms & apps students use as well as digital citizenship tips, steps to connect to the VILS mobile data & technology repair fee reminders.
This brochure is distributed to families during Family Night as well as copies provided during several other family touch-points throughout the year such as report card conferences, etc.
To ensure technology equity, the VILS Coach has provided translated copies so all Tubman families can access this material even if English is not their home language.

VILS Coach created Tubman's Student Technology Handbook
Families are given this Tech Handbook during registration and are instructed to keep it at home for reference. The Technology Agreement at the end of the Handbook must be signed and returned for student to receive their VILS device.
Again, in our commitment to equity, VILS Coach has provided the Student Tech Handbook in all home languages.

We are in the Alignment stage.
How does your school demonstrate excellence in showcasing the outcomes listed above?
Our commitment to ensuring equitable access to educational materials for all families has been a cornerstone of our efforts. To achieve this, we have provided home materials in multiple languages, ensuring that language barriers do not hinder families' ability to support their children's learning. This has been particularly important in our diverse community, where families speak a variety of languages at home.
In addition to providing materials in multiple languages, we have also implemented several touch-points with families to foster engagement. We have hosted in-person family nights, where families can come together to learn about the technology tools and resources available to them. These events have been well-attended and have provided valuable opportunities for families to connect with each other and with school staff.
Next Steps: What are your next steps to share best practices of digital equity and powerful learning with all stakeholders?
As the VILS Coach, one recommendation I would suggest is to host regular technology workshops for parents/guardians. These workshops could cover a range of topics, from internet safety to how to support students' learning with technology at home. We have received feedback from families who would like the opportunity to learn alongside their children and feel more confident in navigating the digital world.
Additionally, I would suggest establishing partnerships with local high schools, colleges, & businesses to provide our students with real-world technology experiences. For example, providing opportunities for students (perhaps STT) visiting local high schools to explore their VR/AR labs, 3D printing labs, robotics, etc. These partnerships would not only enrich our students' learning but also demonstrate the relevance of technology in the world beyond the classroom.
