Schools that support family engagement in boosting at-home digital use can expect better outcomes.
All guiding questions are aligned to the element criteria located in the Portfolio Guide.
Guiding questions:
What are the needs of your community and how are you meeting them?
100% of Tubman students receive free breakfast, lunch, and an end of day supper. Tubman is a school where the inherent inequities that exists within communities at or below the poverty line manifests throughout our school day. We aim to offer our students and families support in several ways including offering device replacement / repair fee forgiveness, counseling, free tutoring, and even financial assistance with housing.
How are families empowered to support their children at home?
Tubman hosts a "Back to School Night" at the beginning of every school year. This year, the VILS Coach was able to have a designated table with sample VILS devices (top picture) where the VILS Coach could walk students and families through all the digital platforms and curriculums on their child/children's devices. This included: School Runner Parent Portal, Google Classroom, Clever, ST Math, Zearn, Amplify, and various device navigation tips so families can support and monitor their student's device usage while at home.
We also provide families with our Tubman Technology Handbook as well as a Family Guide to Technology (linked above) to provide helpful tools and tips for technology. All students and families also have a direct line of communication to the VILS Coach if any questions or concerns arise.
How did you support technology literacy in your community?
Technology literacy is something we are still working to build at Tubman. The CCS VILS Coaches collaborated to create a curriculum for building tech literacy (found linked in the Equity as a Mindset page of DHCS's portfolio). The VILS Coach will meet with Tubman leadership during our EOY meeting to discuss if this plan can be implemented for the 2023-2024 school year. For the 2022-2023 school year we had an enrichment block available for students to practice typing skills.
What are your plans for family engagement at your school? How have/will these activities enhance and support technology integration with your families?
Tubman offers several opportunities for touch-points with families throughout the year. We host a "Back to School" night before school starts, a "Literacy Night", report card conferences, and several other events throughout the year. Attendance at these events has historically been low so we have been actively offering incentives such as raffling Beyonce tickets, gift cards, etc. Attendance has improved with these measures, and moving forward I would like to integrate more of a technology component in these events.
Every Spring Tubman hosts a "ST Math March Madness" tournament where homerooms compete against each other to see which group can complete the most ST Math puzzles. While we do have some time built into our day for students to complete ST Math work, the majority of this work was completed at home with families!
Self Reflection on the Element: (Choose one: Emerging, Aligning, or Optimizing)
I believe Tubman is in the Alignment stage for the 2022-2023 school year.
Strengths: How did your campus exemplify illustrating this element?
Some bright spots within this element include our BOY process of communicating with families about device rollout and device expectations. I'm also very proud of the creation of the Family Guide to Technology I created this year. This pamphlet is a one-stop resources for families for all of our most important student technology.
Next Steps: What could you have done differently to better align with this element?
I would like to create more touch-points throughout the year with families to help them more efficiently navigate our technology. I would like to be able to include an ongoing technology blurb in the weekly Sunday Notes email sent out by the school. I would also like to include
