Guiding questions:
What would you consider to be your biggest challenges this year and how did you overcome them?
One of our big challenges this year was attempting to ensure our students were demonstrating proper digital citizenship and device usage. Throughout the year students were caught using proxy websites and intentionally applying ways to hack around Securly. This created unsafe situations for our students and caused classroom disruptions for our teachers and behavior team. To address this, we launched Securly training with our staff in the second trimester and coaches added teacher-usage of Securly to their observations.
How will these takeaways affect the sustainability of this program?
I am going to push for a more robust digital citizenship plan that is mandatory for our VILS students for the 23-24 school year. I will provide leadership with digital citizenship options such as Google's Common Sense Media, EverFi's Ignition curriculum, and the Digital Citizenship channel within Discovery Education. It is my hope that a commitment to a full digital citizenship course will help provide students with the tools necessary to become responsible technology users and ensure a successful digital future for our students.
Guiding questions:
What would you consider to be your biggest successes this year and why?
I feel like we were very successful in the domains of Ongoing Professional Learning as well as Consistent Access. Having 15+ years of classroom experience allowed our teachers to have a sense of trust in me as a VILS Coach. This allowed staff members to feel like they could come to me for tech questions and support as well as be open to my coaching. We were able to have a more collaborative approach to educational technology and I'm happy to report that 100% of our staff taught their curriculum with technology. We even developed tech-based enrichment programs such as Girls Make Beats and a robust Student Tech Team.
I'm also proud of our developments within Consistent Access. I created a tracker system to get more data on students who needed loaner devices and was able to strategically pinpoint the reason behind loaners. We were able to create solutions for students and families to ensure that every single student had access to technology.
How do your successes align with your professional learning plan?
The two above-mentioned domains were both areas previously identified as areas to focus on for the 22-23 school year. I feel like we made big development leaps within each.
Guiding questions:
How has the campus culture transformed due to this program? How do you know?
I believe that our academic growth & gains is related to our work within technology - ensuring every student not only has 1:1 device, the ability to connect to the internet, and digital curriculums available anywhere. These things help students feel more confident and as a result contributes to a more positive school culture overall. Our teachers and staff are also able to have more confidence in their work as they are supported in delivering their Tier 1 digital curriculums with confidence.
What needs to change (areas of growth) for your continuous growth in the program? Why and how?
While I am extremely proud of the work we have done so far, we definitely have areas of growth moving forward. As mentioned previously, we must commit to a robust digital citizenship program. We must also continue providing support for our families and students to help keep our day-device numbers low. I will continuously look for new PD opportunities and provide targeted-teacher support.
