A cross-functional leadership team sets a clear vision for the school, its culture, and what teaching
and learning look like before putting technology in classrooms.
All guiding questions are aligned to the element criteria located in the Portfolio Guide. Use the questions to guide your reflection on the artifacts to narrate your journey on the goals.
Guiding questions:
How does the campus leadership team model and collaborate with each other to support campus goals?
The Tubman Leadership Team meets regularly to discuss observations, data, and prioritizes next steps to improve academic opportunities for students. Outcomes from this meeting are shared with Instructional Leaders, Directors of Curriculum & Instruction, and the Director of Culture who then coach teachers on how to move forward on suggested next steps.
How does the district leadership team support innovation and collaboration?
Crescent City Schools CMO also meets regularly to discuss observation notes, academic data, and culture reports. CCS CMO prioritizes strategies on how content areas will make academic progress and shares this information with Tubman Leadership.
What evidence do you have that supports policies for teacher and student device usage?
In alignment with our core belief of educational equity, every 5th - 8th grade student and staff member are able to have access to a VILS device and mobile data.
Our Student Technology Handbook is available in both English, Spanish and even Haitian Creole; this Handbook outlines all policies for student technology at Tubman.
How have you implemented best practices gained from leadership calls, national calls, and IT calls? Can you point to ways in which you've modified your PL and IT practices as a result of reflection and learning from others?
Collaboration among other Verizon peers has been an amazing tool as a new VILS Coach. It has allowed me to connect with peers, hear best practices from Verizon experts, and see examples from other school sites.
I have modeled some of our materials we use at Tubman using ideas suggested from our Verizon calls such as a Student Tech Team application.
In one of the breakout rooms during a national call, a fellow VILS Coach was able to share a Staff GSuite Needs Assessment she created. Because of this collaboration, I was able to customize it to Tubman's needs. This Needs Assessment has allowed me to target my coaching and support to staff.
Guiding question:
How do the TLC members impact school improvement or student learning? If not, how can you leverage their expertise?
Members of our TLC use technology in innovative ways through incorporating VILS devices in their daily lessons. These staff members design lessons that incorporate our digital platforms such as Discovery Ed, Kami, Amplify, Nearpod, etc. to facilitate 21st century skills. As a VILS Coach, I am able to help assist teachers in planning these lessons, giving feedback from observations, and highlighting student success.
These teachers are then able to share their experiences with their peers to help onboard other staff members with best practices for some of out most high-impact digital platform tools.
Highlights from TLC:
5th grade Social Studies:
After observing in 5th grade Social Studies, we wanted to push students in engagement and collaboration in alignment with LDOE standards. The teacher and I met for a follow-up and co-planned the following activity.
6th grade Social Studies:
The 6th grade Social Studies teacher wanted to focus on students doing the "heavy-lifting" and completing work independently. We met and co-planned a choice-board for students to complete over several days. This was a hit with students and seeing the work they created was fantastic!
Self Reflection on the Element: (Choose one: Emerging, Aligning, or Optimizing)
I believe we are currently in the Aligning aspect of this domain.
Strengths: How did your campus exemplify illustrating this element?
Our strength within this domain is most clearly seen with our Teacher Leader Corps. Our teachers are on the front lines of using our devices and digital platforms to create engaging educational experiences for our students in every content area and in every grade level.
Next Steps: What could you have done differently to better align with this element?
A monthly VILS-specific check-in with our leadership team and district liaisons would be beneficial to ensure there is alignment within district and school expectations as well as progress monitoring of our digital platforms. This check-in could also serve as a touch point in staff coaching progress and goal-setting.
