THE CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
Developing Mathematical skills is an important tool to be successful in the modern times in the field of science and technology, medicine, economy and even in making decisions. The subject of integers is a very important part of the junior high school curriculum and it symbolizes a move from concrete to abstract thinking. But these concepts on integers as well as its operations hold some conceptual difficulty and these difficulties can affect negatively the process of learning algebraic expressions and equations.
In City Central National High School, it has been observed that the grade 8 students had severe gaps on the concepts and skills in mathematics based on the Pre-Test Assessment on Operations of Integers. They were given a 30-minute time frame to do the test. They are given one minute and 30 seconds to answer each item. Out of ten sections of the grade 8 level, results of data showed that the section in Grade 8 – Assertiveness got the lowest mean percentage score based on the Pre-assessment test on the subtraction of integers and out of 39 students in Grade 8 – Assertiveness, there are 10 students who failed to meet the necessary skills on operations of integers, specifically, subtraction of integers.
Thus, coming up with the project “3Ms: MATHalino at MATHinik sa MATHechnique .” This project aims to enhance the subtraction operations skills on integer of Grade 8 students to enable them to be mathematically competitive globally and locally.
