This is the first book in the Shine series. It begins with Chloe starting school, not just any school - Stage School! A place at Stage School is all that Chloe has ever wanted but things don't pan out the way she has dreamt they would and very soon she isn't feeling too good about things. However, she does eventually start to make some great friends and when this story finishes, on a bit of cliff hanger, the next books in the series focus on each of her friends.
Holly Webb's writing is accessible, warm and charming. These stories are really nice, quite quick, reads.
I LOVE Humphrey! He narrates all the stories and he is SO good, kind, wise and clever - especially for a hamster!
He is the class pet and while he observes the children and the teacher from his cage he learns all sorts of things, including how to read and write. And, each weekend he is taken home by a pupil so he gets to know the children in the class as well. In this way he is able to help them resolve their problems and issues using incredibly ingenious methods:-)
