Decatur JROTC received a very generous national grant from the NRA Foundation. The Grant helped provide the equipment and funds to start a Rifle Marksmanship Team this year.

A great big thank you to the NRA Foundation and Friends of the NRA. Their support to help Teach Freedom, safety and so much more with investment for our marksmanship program is greatly appreciated by the DECATUR RED RAIDER Cadets.

Decatur High School Boys' basketball try-outs will be October 30th from 3:30-5:30pm in the main gym. All participants must have a completed dragon-fly and a physical. If you have any questions please see Coach Walker.

Attention students: If you are interested in trying out for the DHS Tennis Team, please sign up outside of room 101. Tryouts will be held November 16th-18th from 4:00-5:30 at the Point Mallard Tennis Courts. All those interested in trying out must have an up-to-date physical and dragonfly account. If you have any questions, please contact Coach Whitmire.

Decatur High HOSA will be hosting a blood drive on October 29th. If you are interested in donating on October 29th, come to the cafeteria today, during A, B, or C lunch to schedule a time for donation. You MUST be 16 years old to donate. All blood donors will be screened for Covid-19 antibodies. Be a hero, save a life and let's BEAT AUSTIN with our total number of donations!

HOSA is collecting items for the Mental Health Association in Morgan County. Each year schools from around the area collect specific items for those in need this holiday season. The items needed from DHS are body wash/soap, conditioner, & chapstick. Items are needed for 100 men and 100 women in Morgan County. Please drop off donations in room E201, the media center, or the cafeteria in the drop boxes. Donations will begin Oct 26 & conclude Nov 8. All items will be picked up Nov 12. Thank you!

Any student wanting to tryout for indoor and/or outdoor track needs to sign up with Coach Smith. The tryouts will be on November 4th at3:45 at Ogle stadium. YOu must have an updated physical and dragon fly completed before Nov. 4th. See Coach Smith with any questions.

POETRY OUT LOUD Overview

What is Poetry Out Loud? Poetry Out Loud is a nationwide high school poetry recitation competition that encourages the study of great poetry. The program helps students master public speaking skills and build self-confidence, competing for a total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends given at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals.

There are two competitions:

National Program – Students recite a poem from the Poetry Out Loud anthology. Students selected as finalists go to state competition. State winners go to the national competition.

Original Poetry – Students recite their own original poems. Students selected as finalists go to state competition. There is no national competition in original poetry.

Responsibilities of Participating Schools

1. Recruit students for the school competition.

2. Identify judges for the school competition.

3. Hold a school competition.

4. Submit names of winners to the regional coordinator, Dr. John Allen Berry.

5. Help winners get to workshops offered by the regional Poetry Out Loud office.

6. Ensure winners get to the regional competition.

7. Ensure winners get to the state competition.

Event Dates 2020:

October 31 – Virtual workshop with student to prepare for the school competition.

November 21 – Regional Virtual Competition: Individual schools will provide the venues and camera for students to send in videos. Regional judges will select one finalist and one alternate for each competition.

Technology Replacement

For the 2020-21 school year, DCS will be charging for the replacement of a lost Chromebook or charger. The replacement cost for a lost Chromebook is $250 and for a lost charger is $20.

If your Chromebook has been stolen please see the school resource officer.
