From 1914 to 1918, over 324,000 Australians served overseas in the First World War, with two-thirds becoming casualties. These casualties included those who suffered physical wounds as well as psychological ones. Their experiences had long-lasting effects on returned servicemen and women, their families and society.
When Australian troops were called to fight for the British Empire during World War I they had to deal not only with new technology and new methods of fighting that war, but also with increasing incidences of psychological ailments, or shell shock.
