Lesson 1: The experiences of free settlers upon departure, their journey abroad, and their reactions on arrival.
Before you start, familiarise yourself with the following terms.
Most European settlers in Australia in the early colonial years were convicts sent by the British government. There were also some free settlers, however—people who chose to leave their homes in Britain and make a new life in the colony. Those who made the long and difficult journey to Australia received assistance from the British government, which wanted to make the remote colony stable and capable of supporting itself.

Using the knowledge gained from the presentation, 'Experience of Free Settlers.' to write a diary entry, describing the condition of their transport to Australia.

Week 8 Extension Task:
You will work in groups of four. You will be allocated ONE of the following migrant groups and are tasked to research and create a slide show to present to the class about the following aspects of the groups' migrant experience:
-Afghans
-Japanese/Chinese
-Irish/Scottish
-New Zealand/Māori
-Other of Group Choice
-Briefly explain a little about the group. Where they come from and some of the push and pull factors involved in their migration to Australia.
-Explain how they were able travelled here and briefly describe where possible the conditions of their transportation. Maybe a map that shows their journey.
-Outline the challenges they faced as a new migrants: '
-how they were treated?
- Where your group mainly settled, types of employment they engaged in.
-Provide two sources related to your group and explain how these sources contribute to an understanding of their experience in Australia.
-Evaluate the contribution of this group on the development of the Australian nation.
