Japanese Continuers

Japanese Beginners

Japanese has been taught at MacKillop Catholic College since the college began in 2003 and has only grown in popularity within the MacKillop community. We have a strong Sister School relationship with Nihon Daiichi Junior High School in Tokyo which we visit every three years and they visit us every year.

NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA)

The study of Japanese language is of particular importance to Australians, both culturally and economically. Japan is Australia’s leading trading partner and there are significant cultural ties between Australia and Japan. Japanese has been identified as one of the priority languages in the Asia-Pacific region to be taught in Australian schools. This recognises the close relationship between the two countries. The study of Japanese contributes to the overall education of students, particularly in the areas of communication, cross-cultural understanding, literacy and general knowledge. Students can gain access to both the language and the rich cultural traditions of Japan, as well as an understanding of different attitudes and values within the wider Australian community and beyond.

Sister school visit

Every year, our college hosts students from Nihon Daiichi Junior High, Tokyo. All students studying Japanese are encouraged to host one of the students. This is a special oppportunity that allows students to form lifelong friendships and learn about another country and culture.

Host a Japanese exchange student

During Term 1 & 3, MacKillop hosts Japanese exchange students. Families of MacKillop are invited to host one of these students for the duration of their stay.

Every three years, Japanese students are offered the opportunity to travel to Japan for a cultural tour. This tour has grown in popularity and all students expereince the culture of Japan, including attending lessons at our Sister School in Tokyo, and also travel to Kyoto, Nara and Hiroshima.

"Japan was a once in a life time cultural experience. Being able to travel and live with a family halfway around the world was one of the most monumnetal moments in my life. Living with the family opened the doors to live within the Japanese culture. Trying new foods and exploring new places was something I will never forget. My host family was so accomodating and made me feel so welcome that I didn't want to leave. I still keep in touch with them today and I cant wait to go back." Ryley Small (Yr 12 Student and School Captain)
