In a typical year, each DHS student will be invited to the guidance office at least once to discuss important topics about their future. Career planning is the focus of these meetings and we discuss various topics such as how to match their interests, abilities, and values with a career that will be a good fit for them.
The goal is to get each student thinking about their future as a freshman, identifying career possibilities, and getting information about these possibilities. As students go through high school and approach senior year, we get more and more specific about careers and identify what the student will need to do in order to obtain the job or jobs they are seriously considering.
We look very specifically at the different types of post-secondary education, what needs to happen in order to get into these schools, how to pay for this education, and how to identify which school may be the best for them. This same approach can be applied to students who are looking to enter the trades and want to pursue an apprenticeship.
I really enjoy meeting each student and working on their career plan as they go through high school. The more they can plan ahead and gather information about their future career, the more likely it is that they will find themselves working in a satisfying occupation down the road.
