Every teacher has their own unique classroom procedures and expectations for student behavior and down in the gym it's no different. We spend a great deal of time reinforcing the routines on a regular basis so that our class can run as efficiently and effectively as possible. I use a simple 1-2-3 warning system. If a student is misbehaving or disrupting the class I will give a "1" to the student. If that same student is misbehaving I will give them a "2." If the behavior is still not where it should be I will give a "3" and that is a trip to the "Uh-Oh Chair." Safety and following directions is very important in the gymnasium. Both are enhanced when our rules and procedures in Physical Education are performed each day.
Parents, please help your student be prepared and safe during physical education by providing athletic shoes that can be securely fastened. Keeping a pair at school is best. If this is not possible, please have them bring or wear a pair to school on PE days. This will allow them to fully participate in all activities safely.
* No Crocs, dress shoes, flip flops, sandals, winter boots, hiking boots or slip on shoes of any type.
When students first enter the classroom they make sure their shoes are tied. If they are not tied they go to the red circle and tie them. If their shoes are tied they perform the locomotor (Run, Skip, Walk, Jog, etc.) around the outside of the basketball court baseline. Once they have moved for a minute students
PE teachers use a variety of ways to gain a class's attention. I use a simple 1, 2, 3 signal to get the students to stop and focus. When all the students hear the signal. They know it is time to be quiet, take a knee, put their hand on their forehead like "Thinking Man" and listen. I then give my directions on the next activity or what the next step is. When I shout "Go" That signals the students may start moving. The students are taught to stop when they hear Mr. Nash shout "1, 2, 3!"
Students are expected to follow the one rule of the gym, RESPECT. This can be demonstrated in three main areas:
1. Respect the Teacher
Listen when Mr. Nash is talking
Follow the directions
Start & stop on the signal
2. Respect Others
Be nice/kind - no put-downs or name calling
Invite others to your team/group
Work out disputes at the Conflict Corner
3. Respect the Equipment
Use it correctly
Be safe when using it
Put it away when done
If a student needs to get a drink of water or go to the bathroom they need to make sure they always ask me before they leave the gym to get a drink. It is important that we know where are students are at all the time and leaving the gymnasium without letting a teacher know or Mr. Nash is never ok. They may not leave to get water or go to the bathroom when I am going over important rules/directions for our activities. Once I am done with the directions, the student may go and get water or go to the bathroom during the activity. This way they don't miss any important directions when they are gone.
At times students will come up to me "tattling" on another student. In an effort to help teach students the valuable social skills needed to work through minor conflicts, I have developed the problem solving corner. If a student has an issue with another student they must ask (take) the "offending" student to the problem solving area in the corner of the gym. There they will find a poster that will help guide them through the issue and come up with a solution. Once students agree to the solution they can leave the problem solving corner and return to the activity. If a student refuses to go to the problem solving corner when asked, that student (who is usually the guilty one) has an immediate 3-minute time out. The same holds true if a student leaves the problem solving corner before agreeing to a solution. If students cannot work out an issue, they may ask me for help. I will not settle the dispute for them, but rather offer suggestions that the two parties may want to consider.
