In our world today, young teens struggle with confidence. It is not easy being a teenager in this world. A lot of teens are on social media, which also increases anxiety and depression, which could result in a lack of self-confidence. Growing up, some people are told who to be and how to act. People tend to forget that they do not have to look like all of those TikTok girls who have hourglass figures and clear skin. Teenagers and people in general need reminders that they are beautiful, no matter how they look.
There are always going to be moments when people get insecure or are not feeling their best-- physically or mentally. No matter what a person's body looks like or how clear their skin is and how long their hair is, there will always be a moment in time when they just feel gross. What might help when people feel that way is to find their own positive messages. Mind, a British-based mental health organization, says, “Confidence is about understanding and accepting ourselves for who we are. Confidence is not thinking we are better than others, thinking we're good at everything or never feeling scared, nervous or unsure.” Teens struggle with not only physical confidence in their appearances but also mental struggles. It may be that they are not feeling good enough or feeling that they are a burden or letting people down. It could even be that they are lonely and feel like they have nobody and could never have anyone. Not all teens care to admit that they are struggling because some can just handle it and make it go away on their own. Others are just too scared. In high school, we are surrounded by all these people. It seems hard to feel alone, but some young adults do.
There are plenty of strategies that people can follow when their self-esteem is down. The NHS says, “ Simple techniques that may help you feel better about yourself are- recognizing what you're good at, building positive relationships, being kind to yourself, and start saying 'no'." Just doing those simple techniques could make a person feel better when they are at your lowest. If you are feeling down about your appearance, then it could be helpful to put down your phone and not look at social media and put no filters on yourself. Looking in the mirror and saying three things you like about your physical appearance could be helpful, as well. A helpful reminder from yourself could be very useful. It won’t be easy at first but, after awhile, it should start to feel easier. Young adults and teens doing these strategies could reduce the number of teens who struggle with confidence.
As teens grow up, they should be built up with confidence-- both physically and mentally. Having a support system, whether that might be friends or parents, guardians, and significant others could be helpful. Being young in 2025 is a struggle when you have social media breathing down your throat. Using strategies to find self-confidence and perseverance within yourself as a whole could be beneficial for future generations. In high school, many people have a built-in safety net. After high school, when you start living on your own and having to be an adult, self-confidence is beneficial. Helping teens in the world build that right now will help them when they go into the “real world” and start their lives on their own.
